The Jefferson County School System is the second-largest public school system in the U.S. State of Alabama and serves areas of Jefferson County, Alabama, that are not part of a city-based school system. These exceptions include: * Bessemer (Bessemer Public Schools) * Birmingham (Birmingham City Schools) * Fairfield (Fairfield City Schools) * Homewood (Homewood Public Schools) * Hoover (Hoover City Schools) * Leeds (Leeds City Schools) * Midfield (Midfield City Schools) * Mountain Brook (Mountain Brook School System) * Tarrant (Tarrant City Schools) * Trussville (Trussville City Schools) * Vestavia Hills (Vestavia Hills School System) ==Leadership== The system is presided over by the Jefferson County Board of Education, which consists of five members. J. Dean Taylor is the board president, assuming the post in November 2014. Day-to-day operations are run by a superintendent. That post is currently held by Dr. Craig Pouncey, who took over in June 2014, following the ouster of Dr. Stephen Nowlin after 16 months in office.
